Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene SBS polymers in asphalt modification for road paving
SBS uses styrene and 1,3-butadiene as the main raw materials, and uses anionic polymerization to produce linear SBS, star shaped SBS, and SBS with added filling oil. This SBS is mainly used for modified asphalt, shoe making, and adhesive making. The appearance of SBS is white or light solid, free of mechanical impurities and oil stains.
Process Overview
SBS is produced from styrene and butadiene as raw materials. In industry, the lithium based initiator anionic solution polymerization process is used, and the polymer solution becomes a solid product after coagulation and solvent removal. The conventional production methods use intermittent polymerization and wet coagulation processes.
Foreign manufacturers are committed to developing continuous polymerization technology and dry coagulation process. Compared with the current intermittent polymerization technology, the main characteristics of continuous polymerization technology are high production efficiency, stable product quality, and low material and energy consumption. The conventional wet coagulation process consumes large amount of water, energy and sewage, and may increase the gel content in the product. The dry coagulation process can overcome many defects of the wet coagulation process, which is a revolution in the synthetic rubber industry.

The styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) is a kind of thermoplastic elastomer which has the same elasticity with the rubber in normal temperature, and can be melt to flow at high temperature like plastics, called plastic material. Thus, the SBS modified asphalt is characterized as neither being viscous when being heated nor being fragile when cooled; of great plasticity and property of aging resistance. And the SBS modified asphalt is now the most successfully applied and widely used modified one. The amount of SBS added into the asphalt is normally between 5% ~ 10%. SBS is normally used in making not only waterproof membranes but also sealing material and waterproof paint.

CH401 is a linear block copolymer with 70,000-90,000 molecular weight, which also has 40% content styrene. It's widely applied to plastic modification and compounding, waterproof membranes and adhesive agent.

Asphalt modification
The application of SBS in asphalt modification includes two aspects: waterproofing membrane asphalt modification and road asphalt modification. The asphalt waterproofing membrane modified with SBS has the characteristics of good low-temperature flexibility, self-healing ability and durability, high-temperature flow resistance, aging resistance, thermal stability, and impact resistance. It can greatly improve the performance of the waterproofing membrane, extend its service life, and meet the needs of important buildings and structures. It has been widely used in municipal engineering, including bridge decks (concrete), subways, and underground passages, as well as in hydraulic engineering, including water tanks, canals, and so on.
Polymer modification
SBS is a good resin modifier that can be blended with resins such as PP, PE, PS, ABS, etc. to improve the impact resistance and flexibility of products. This type of product is commonly used in electrical components, automotive steering wheels, bumpers, seals, etc. Compared with developed countries and regions abroad, China's polymer modification industry is still in its infancy. In addition, SBS adhesive has good elasticity, bonding strength, and low-temperature performance, low viscosity, and better creep resistance than general EVA and acrylic adhesives, making it widely used in daily life. Styrene-butadiene-styrene and calcium carbonate nanoparticles were melt-blended with polystyrene for extrusion-foaming using supercritical carbon dioxide to simultaneously toughen and reinforce polystyrene foams.89 The cell structure was related to the system viscosity, by which toughening agent (SBS) also exerted a positive influence on foam quality in addition to nano-calcium carbonate which acted as nucleating agent.89 Styrene-butadiene block copolymer was used as toughening additive and talc as nucleating agent in production of poly(lactic acid) foam with supercritical nitrogen.80 The toughening additive acted as a nucleating agent due to which the amount of talc could be reduced.80 Polypropylene foam sheets containing impact modifier (Hytrel IM-1) were manufactured with excellent impact strength and low density, using supercritical carbon dioxide, for application in electronic packaging.90
